Flomerics Celebrates 20th Anniversary, Validating Concept of Simulation for Non-Specialists
Flomerics celebrates its 20th anniversary as an independent company this year, placing it firmly into a rare and elite group of companies that have prospered for such a long period. According to Flomerics’ founder, Dr David Tatchell, this landmark is a testimony to the company’s high-integrity, people-oriented culture and its core concept of delivering engineering simulation software for use by designers and engineers rather than just full-time analysts and specialists. Flomerics has reached an age that puts it among the oldest companies involved in computer aided engineering, and has just completed a record-breaking fiscal year where it has achieved a new high in revenue and seen its worldwide customer base grow to over 2,500 sites and over 7,000 individuals.

Sharp Laboratories Selects EFD.V5 Engineering Fluid Dynamics Software for CATIA V5 Sharp Laboratories Europe has selected Flomerics’ EFD.V5 engineering fluid dynamics software, embedded in CATIA V5, for the design and virtual prototype testing of Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) modules for various applications in Europe. “We selected EFD.V5 because it was the most accessible Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software for engineers working with CATIA V5. Analysis results are easily generated and also improve communication between different groups within the company” said Scott Boham, Mechanical Design Engineer. “EFD.V5 will be used by mechanical design engineers with varying levels of CFD experience – from novice to expert.”

Thermal Simulation Dramatically Reduces Time to Design Complex Burn-in Test System at Antares
Antares Advanced Test Technologies was recently asked by one of its customers to develop a burn-in test system capable of maintaining various electronic components at a wide range of temperatures both above and below ambient.
Trevor Moody, Thermal and Mechanical Engineer at Antares, said “It would have taken at least 8 weeks using traditional build-and-test methods to develop a mechanism to meet the design requirements. Using FLOTHERM we developed a design that met all the customer’s requirements in only two and a half weeks and built just one prototype. We developed a unique mechanism that moves with springs to mate up with devices at different heights and uses thermal interface materials in gaps between moving parts to minimize thermal resistance.”

Thermal Simulation Helps Amphenol Overcome Challenge of 14U Chassis Dissipating 1700 Watts
Amphenol Total Connection Solutions (TCS) used Flomerics’ Flotherm software to overcome thermal management challenges in a new data communications product with an exceptionally high power dissipation of 1700 watts in a 14U chassis. This provided a tough thermal challenge in the telecom central office where equipment must fit within tight space constraints and demonstrate the ability to operate even after fan failures. Amphenol engineer Chris Heard simulated the product, which includes a total of fourteen 100-watt and two 150-watt printed circuit boards (PCBs).
“This project demonstrates how thermal simulation can be used in the early stages of the design process to minimize expensive late-stage changes and reduce time to market,” said Heard.
