Engineers at Environmental Systems Design, Inc. (ESD) used Flomerics’ Flovent computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software to verify the design of the first university residence hall in Illinois to obtain a Certified Gold Level rating under the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design® (LEED) green building system. ESD used the relatively new displacement ventilation approach in their mechanical design of Saint Xavier University’s new $9 million, 37,000 square foot Arthur Rubloff Hall in order to reduce energy consumption. “The simulation evaluated the comfort of the building under a wide range of conditions and demonstrated that the new design, which uses displacement ventilation would not only be energy efficient but also comfortable and healthy,” said James Vallort, an ESD engineer.

Flomerics Celebrates 20th Anniversary, Validating Concept of Simulation for Non-Specialists
Flomerics celebrates its 20th anniversary as an independent company this year, placing it firmly into a rare and elite group of companies that have prospered for such a long period. According to Flomerics’ founder, Dr David Tatchell, this landmark is a testimony to the company’s high-integrity, people-oriented culture and its core concept of delivering engineering simulation software for use by designers and engineers rather than just full-time analysts and specialists. Flomerics has reached an age that puts it among the oldest companies involved in computer aided engineering, and has just completed a record-breaking fiscal year where it has achieved a new high in revenue and seen its worldwide customer base grow to over 2,500 sites and over 7,000 individuals.

MARENCO AG Reduces Extractor Hood Design Time
Since 1997 Marenco AG has been offering innovative engineering and consulting services to companies such as Hilti AG, Roche and Bosch. One of their customers recently contracted the design of a new kitchen extractor hood to Marenco. Placed over a cooking range, extractor hoods remove grease, smoke and odors from the kitchen. Extractor hoods rely on a combination of a fan and filtration system to extract and or clean the air. Designing extractor hoods is an especially challenging process since it is extremely difficult to see inside a working prototype and how various components interact with one another.

TROX Invests a Further £100k in R&D Facilities
Leading air distribution system provider TROX UK has invested over £100,000 in further extending its test facilities and purchase of specialist equipment.
As well as creating six separate test cells for comfort air conditioning and CO2 testing and product development, TROX has also invested in “state of the art” engineering fluid dynamics (EFD) equipment.
EFD is used to obtain computer visualisations of air distribution in terms of products and can provide a wide range of data prior to any detailed testing being carried out.
Cliff Bailey, laboratory manager at TROX UK, said: “EFD gave us 6 months testing and results in little over 3 weeks. We were then able to take the recommended options from the EFD analysis and conduct detailed full scale actual testing with the beam engine.
